Summary

Part Two: A Five-Paragraph Essay

Prepare by reading the short story, “Miss Brill,” by Katherine Mansfield, in the fiction volume of Literature Craft & Voice.

I suggest that you read the story a number of times, and you should consider how, during this test, you will compose a literary analysis drawing from your knowledge of the literary devices/techniques (consider the list above) that writers use to convey theme. For your essay, you will write and support a thesis statement about the theme, and you should surely arrive to class on the day of the test already knowing your thesis.
