Cause-Effect Essay

(Total Value: 10%)

Due date:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday Class: 10/19/07

General Guidelines:

  1. Page count: 3 full pages minimum to 4 full pages maximum, plus an additional page, which is the works cited page. If your paper falls short of the minimum required page count the grade will certainly suffer.
  2. Make certain that the essay has a thesis.
  3. Use the formatting guidelines established during class lectures.
  4. Use MLA Style Guidelines.
  5. Remember to title your essay in the form of a two-part title. The two parts should be separated by a colon, and neither part should read “cause-effect essay.”
  6. Remember that your assignment is to write an argumentative essay about whether or not the United States should shift to universal health care.

Background:

  1. The issue you are writing about is the effect that a universal health care system would have if the United States were to adopt this policy. In other words, every American citizen would have complete health care coverage from birth to death.
  2. You will argue that a universal health care policy would result in changes in society that would be beneficial, or you will argue that a universal health care policy would result in changes in society that would be detrimental.

Outside sources you are required to engage:

  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNJMTQD3Hcs “Michael Moore v. Wolf Blitzer,” which originally aired on CNN’s The Larry King Show, on 7/9/07.
  2. http://www.michaelmoore.com/sicko/news/article_10017.php Moore’s response on his website to CNN and Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s criticism of “SICKO,” posted on 7/9/07.
  3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjvlGRfozss “LARRY KING: MICHAEL MOORE & *DOCTOR* SANJAY GUPTA pt1,” which originally aired on CNN’s The Larry King Show, on 7/10/07.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoiyJ1LPtdc  “LARRY KING: MICHAEL MOORE & *DOCTOR* SANJAY GUPTA pt2,” which originally aired on CNN’s The Larry King Show, on 7/10/07.

Prompt:

  1. Remember also that at its heart this assignment is argumentative, so your focus should be on advancing a persuasive argument.
  2. Remember to have a strong introductory paragraph that frames the topic of your paper.
  3. Remember that the final sentence of your introductory paragraph should be your thesis statement.
  4. To support your argument you must use two outside sources beyond the ones I have provided on this prompt, and they cannot come from YouTube. One of those two outside sources must support the view that a universal health care system is needed, and the other must support the view that a universal health care system would not be a wise choice.
  5. I will provide direct instruction during class to show how to cite various sources, including YouTube.
  6. In your paper you will quote from a minimum of three sources: at least one of the YouTube sources, and the two outside sources described in item four of this section’s list. For each source quoted in your paper there must be a corresponding works cited page citation.

How to turn in this essay: a paper copy is due during class on the due date. Additionally, an electronic copy is due, prior to the beginning of class, on the due date, and it must be turned in to TurnItIn.com as a MS Word doc file. Use the TurnItIn.com “file upload” method on the submit screen. You will be instructed during class about how to create a TurnItIn.com account, and how to turn in your work. Your essays will be considered late until both the paper copy and the electronic copies are turned in. All other rules for late work, as delineated in section six of the course syllabus, also apply. Moreover, your electronic turn-in must be an exact duplicate of the paper copy. In other words, no further corrections or revisions will be accepted. Also, if the electronic and paper copies do not match up it will have a negative impact on the assignment’s grade.
